Parish Update
Dear Parishioners,
We announced at all the Masses on March 9 and 10 that Cardinal Sean O'Malley has appointed a new pastor for Mary Queen of Peace Parish, beginning on June 1. His name is Fr. Timothy Hynes, and he is currently a parochial vicar at St. Catherine of Siena in Norwood. Fr. Hynes visited Medford briefly last week, and is looking forward to coming here. Please see his message to the Parish below. And, for those who may be unaware ... I have been appointed by Cardinal Sean to be a spiritual director at St. John's Seminary in Brighton, beginning on June 1. Let's ask the Lord to guide and support us all during this time of transition.

Hello Mary, Queen of Peace!
It is a joy to make a simple introduction to you all through this short bulletin announcement. In the near future I look forward to a much more personal introduction on June 1st when I am privileged to join you all as pastor of Mary, Queen of Peace.
By now I am sure many of you are eager to get to know a little more about your next pastor. I assure you: He is just as eager to get to know you!
I was born and raised in Windham, New Hampshire, the fifth of eight children, all of whom have remained local. I attended undergraduate studies at what is now called Assumption University (in my day, still a college). From there I moved to Portsmouth, NH where I started my career as a software engineer in a small, but growing startup company. After three years in Portsmouth, I felt God calling me to something different, something that would draw me closer to him. This call was realized as an invitation to become a missionary in Barrios Altos, Lima, Perú, in a neighborhood some have called “desfavorecido” [unfavored].
After two years as a missionary I returned to the U.S. to restart my engineering career at a defense contractor in Cambridge, MA. Nevertheless, I continued to feel a calling to serve God’s people in a more personal way. After much time in prayer and reflection, especially in Eucharistic Adoration, I discerned a call to enter the seminary to study for the priesthood. There at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton the Lord continued to confirm that calling and at the end of my studies I was ordained a priest on May 18, 2019.
At that time, Cardinal Seán assigned me to St. Mary’s, Foxboro, MA as parochial vicar. The first nine months of my ministry were quite ordinary until the world turned upside down in March, 2020. During that time, I was privileged to take up residence in Lynnfield, MA as a member of the priest COVID response team. For more than two months my mission was to bring the Most Holy Eucharist, the Sacrament of the Sick, and Last Rites to the ill and dying around the North Shore and beyond. It was a very grace-filled time in my life as a priest to be able to bring the Sacraments to those otherwise living in isolation with very little human contact.
Eventually, I returned to parish life in Foxboro where I remained until I was asked to take a new assignment as parochial vicar at St. Catherine of Siena in Norwood, MA. This 1st of June will mark the end of my two years here at St. Catherine’s and the start of my new term as pastor of Mary Queen of Peace in Medford. While I am saddened at the prospect of leaving behind the many wonderful friendships that have developed in these two parishes over the last five years, I am excited to get to work in the vineyard of the Lord in Medford where I am sure many new friendships await.
Please be assured of my prayers for you all and, if you would be so kind, please pray for me also, that I may be the holy pastor God calls me to be and that you all most certainly deserve!
Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,
-Fr. Hynes

The Catholic Appeal is a way that we can fortify, sustain, and expand the many ministries and services that serve thousands across the Archdiocese. We are so grateful to all who have contributed to the 2024 Catholic Appeal campaign here at Mary Queen of Peace Parish. To date, we have raised $33,915, which means we are at 64% of our goal. More importantly 142 parishioners have participated in our parish campaign so far. We hope to achieve 100% participation from our parishioners! Our heartfelt thanks to all who have helped make our campaign a success so far.
Can you help us reach our goal by the time Father Paul leaves in June 1st? It would be great to credit him with this success! Please note that this campaign is an assessment to our parish. This means that, if we don’t make our goal, the parish has to make up the shortfall from our limited funds. We also get to share in the success of exceeding the campaign goal. Last year, we earned a rebate of $4,400, as we raised contributions in excess of the goal!
If you have not had the opportunity to support the Appeal yet, we invite you to make your gift today to help us reach our goal. Pick up an envelope at the back of the church or make an on-line donation by using the QR code above or visiting the appeal website at www.bostoncatholicappeal.org. Your participation in the Appeal is appreciated by our parish and all those who are served by the ministries funded by the Appeal. Let’s move Forward in Faith in support of all our parishes, schools, and communities!

The St. Francis of Assisi Furnace Has Been Paid For!
Thanks to many generous parishioners, we are happy to announce that the new furnace at St. Francis Church has been paid for! The new furnace, which was installed in early January to replace the 40 year-old furnace that had failed, cost $78,000. After taking $40,000 from the Capital Campaign Fund of 2019, we asked the parishioners to donate to pay off the remaining $38,000. And many people stepped up to the challenge!
One donor, who has lived in and volunteered at St. Francis for many years, made an anonymous donation of $20,000. Another anonymous donor contributed $5,000. There were also 2 donations of $2,500 each, and 8 donations of $1,000. The total amount raised at this date is $56,848, which is over and above the $38,000 that was needed. We will put the extra money, $18,848, into our savings to fund future repairs and improvements. Just this week, we had to replace a main valve in the heating system at a cost of $7,000.
Thank you to all who contributed to this urgent appeal! Whether you gave $20,000 or $20, every bit helped to restore the boiler in our beautiful St. Francis of Assisi Church. May the Lord reward all who continue to support our Parish each week as well as in special circumstances like this.
Fr. Paul
PLEASE NOTE: The March and April envelopes and second collections for St. Francis Furnace will be put back toward Utilities and Snow Removal.

Cardinal Seán O’Malley reminded us, “It is in the Eucharist where we find our true identity.” Thousands gathered together with our Cardinal Archbishop on June 18, 2022 to celebrate Jesus’ True Presence in the Eucharist. The Eucharistic Congress concluded with a Eucharistic Procession, where we brought Jesus out to the world, to remind everyone who they truly are.
We are now entering the second year of the National Eucharistic Revival, which focuses on our parishes, the Church’s hands and feet in the world. This phase “will foster Eucharistic devotion at the parish level, strengthening our liturgical life through faithful celebration of the Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, missions, resources, preaching, and organic movements of the Holy Spirit.”
Attend the National Eucharistic Congress
July 17 – 21, 2024
Indianapolis, Indiana
At this historic event, more than 80,000 Catholics of all ages will gather in Indianapolis to reconsecrate their hearts to the source and summit of our faith.
A limited number of tickets to the National Eucharistic Congress are now available through the Boston Archdiocese at the discounted price of $250 each. Additional tickets are available for individuals or groups through the National Eucharistic Congress. Please contact Chris Donoghue for more information.
